"Kabir says, just like Mother's Love for her child is endless, unselfish and enduring, come what may. Just like Fish cannot live without water. Just like Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction, so is the devotee's endless longing for Harinam."

Once when roaming about and frolicking among the hills and dales, a Musk deer suddenly became aware of an exquisite musk-scent which stirred the innermost depths of its soul so profoundly that the deer was determined to find the source of this heavenly fragrance. So keen was the deer’s longing for the scent that it roamed about in a desperate search. It knew no fear and no rest for years and years until one day it fell from a cliff with a fatal injury. While breathing its last, the deer suddenly realized that the scent which ravished its heart, making it roam aimlessly all through life came from its own navel. Thus, the last few moments of the deer’s life were moments of regrets for having chased after something, all life-long that was ultimately within itself.
We are all like the musk deer. We search God at pilgrimages except within where He dwells. We run here and there but we arrive nowhere.

"Kabir says, I laugh when I hear that the fish in the water is thirsty.
God Realization is about the journey within to the sacred shrine of one's own soul, making a conscious effort to overcome the evil passions-Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, and Ahankaar.
All this cannot be accomplished by merely visiting the external or man-made shrines or spots of pilgrimage.
In this composition Kabir employs a paradoxical image to critique the futile search for external fulfillment, while true contentment lies within the self."

"Kabir says, in this ocean of worldly life, millions of waves of vices surge like the torrential rains, storms and floods. Within this body dwell the five enemies
lust, anger, greed, emotional attachment and egotism. They become powerful evils when their negative impact dominates a person’s mind. These ‘five’ also have their numerous variations such as enviousness, stubborn mindedness, selfishness, deception, wickedness, falsehood, corruption, bigotry, hatred, insecurity, desires and fears, discontentment, intolerance, revenge, unforgiveness, unhappiness, and so on. They bring man down to the animal nature.
Since these are the negative pulls of human nature and very powerful and destructive, the internal war to eradicate them needs much greater bravery, fearlessness and indomitable courage."

"Kabir says, while telling the beads and counting the number of rosary revolutions performed on the fingers, the mind is like an unbridled colt wandering about. All such deeds are therefore of no avail. While the untold treasure of divinity lies hidden within, we search for it without and so all our efforts go in vain.
To operate a bull-driven oil mill, the bull harnessed to a large wooden or metal press is trained to walk in circles, turning the press and crushing the oil seeds. Going round and round for whole day, yet as such the bull has not travelled anywhere. Similarly turning the rosary round and round with wandering mind remains only a physical effort. While telling the beads if the mind is not still, what is the good of doing it after all?

कबीर सोई सुरिमा, मन सूं माडै झू़झ I
पंच पयादा पाडी ले, दूरि करै सब दूज II

A man's real enemies are not outside but within his own mind. The five major weaknesses of the human personality Kam(lust), Krodh(anger), Lobh(greed), Moh( attachment) and Ahankar(ego) are identified because of the obstruction they are believed to cause in man's pursuit of the moral and spiritual path. We all have them, they are inherent in us all. Eradicating them in entirety is not possible or practical. No one but we can help ourself to achieve that for us with our own efforts.

"Kabir says, only a rare person who is Awake (Aware, Alert, Conscious) of the onslaught of Maya (worldly attractions and their corrupting influences) can lessen the negative dominance of these five evils and their control of our mind."

Kabir speaks directly to the heart of mindfulness and living in the here-and-now. He suggests that we should let go of our attachment to the past or future and instead focus on the present moment. He encourages us to be receptive to the unfolding of life, just as a surfer rides the waves of the ocean. This composition emphasizes that by embracing the present, we can discover eternity in each fleeting instant.

"Kabir says, you must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment."

ज्यों तिल माहि तेल है, ज्यों चकमक में आग I
 तेरा साईं तुझ ही में है, जाग सके तो जाग II

This doha of Kabir shatters the notion of the divine as a distant entity perched on high.
Kabir says, the divine is not something high above us, but woven into the very fabric of existence. He reminds us that it's all around us – in the sun's warmth, the whisper of the wind, the majestic sweep of a mountain range. It's a divine tapestry woven into the very fabric of the natural world, accessible to all. It is inside us. The divine spark resides within each of us, shimmering in our hearts, minds, and very being. Through introspection, through mindful connection with the world around us, we can ignite that spark, allowing it to shine outwards, illuminating both ourselves and those we encounter.
More than just a philosophical musing, look for it in the sunrise, feel it in the embrace of a loved one, listen for it in the quiet moments of contemplation. And most importantly, nurture the divine spark within our own being, allowing it to guide our actions and illuminate our path. In doing so, one'll discover that the divine isn't some distant object of worship, but an ever-present force pulsating within and around us, waiting to be awakened.

"Kabir says, the sesame seed contains oil. However, when we see the seed, we don't see the oil. The oil needs to be extracted from the seed. Same way fire is not visible when we look at the flint stone. However, vigorous rubbing ignites the fire which is latent in the flint. Same way, Kabir asserts, that our body - the temple - seats the Divine.  This divinity is our true self.  However, due to our ignorance, we are unaware of it. Man is potentially divine and the sole purpose of this life is to discover that divinity. The time to do is here and now".

कबीर दुनिया देहुरै, सीस नवांवण जाइ I
हिरदा भीतर हरि बैसै, तू ताहि सौ ल्यौ लाइ II

There once was a Musk Deer who very early in her life began to notice this heavenly scent in the air. Intoxicated by its smell, she set out to search for the source of this divine aroma. She searched high and low and every where she went she could smell it lightly in the air, but its source always eluded her. She searched the depths of every forrest, smelled around every tree, tasting every blade of grass and still couldn't discover where this scent was coming from. She remained determined because the scent was so glorious she knew deep down that she would be profoundly happy once she finally found it.
She ended up devoting her entire life to her search and one day fell exhausted onto the forest floor. As she fell one of her horns pierced her own belly. Suddenly the air was overwhelmingly flooded with this divine heavenly scent. After a lifetime of searching, in the presence of the final moments of her precious life she realized the scent was coming from her, the whole time.
This story is a perfect metaphor for how we human live our lives. God is within, yet we seek Him outside.

not in masses, not in kirtans,
When you really look for me, you will see me instantly, you will find me in the tiniest house of time.
I am in all. All that is, is I.The different forms in existence are my myriad manifestations, yet I am apart from all. Call me Kabir, call me Ram. It is one and the same. I am not a child, I am not old. I go not at anyone’s bidding, nor come at anyone’s command.

दरिया की लहर दरिया है जी

The water of each wave is the one water of ocean. There are no many waters. There are many waves but only one water which appears as different waves. The one water appears as many waves; each wave-form although may have different shape and dimensions  it is made from the same, the essence of each wave is one and the same seawater.
Similarly the essence of each one of us is the infinite, unlimited bliss-consciousness. There are not many consciousnesses; each being has not his own individual consciousness. The one undivided, unlimited consciousness reflects in the infinite wave-forms (all beings). There are many bodies and many minds; each human being is a different body-wave and a mind-wave, but the one consciousness is the common substratum of all bodies and minds. There is no separation between the us and consciousness and between each other. We are all expressions of the one undivided, unlimited consciousness and we are that consciousness itself. We are both the wave and the ocean, the form and the formless, the finite and the infinite; the finite form for a short time and the universal, infinite, consciousness, the common background of all appearances for ever.

Kabir says, the waves are one with the ocean. Both are sea water. The waves are only an expression of the ocean. The ocean is permanent and the waves are impermanent. But the waves never stop to be the ocean.
Within the Supreme Bramha, the worlds are being told like beads : Look upon that rosary with the eyes of wisdom."

The remembrance of God's name is to be done with the tongue of thought and not by word of mouth. By telling beads on the rosary, it may give a mental satisfaction, but leads nowhere. Aeons have passed in telling beads, yet our minds changed not; So cast off the wooden beads and take to the mental ones. Let it be a bead of the mind that dawns an inward light.

"Kabir says, we waste our entire life in performance of outer works of merits, but the soul finds no inlet. The veil within does not give way and soul remains without. We should therefore turn the bead of the mind, and it will act like a push-button giving an ingress of the soul to spiritual realms within. If God Realisation would come true just by telling the beads, so would it have been for the water wheel rotating with pots set around it's rim."

The two names — Sagun and Nirgun — are given to the same One Universal Energy, which is the subject of understanding, NOT the subject of blind faith.
Both — Sagun (visible) and Nirgun (invisible or formless) cannot work without the other.
Just as a coin has two sides, but that does not mean there are two coins. Coin is just one, but it has two sides. Similarly, Nirgun and Sagun are two sides or aspects of the same One Formless Universal Energy — none of the Creation is without Its Presence. The two names given to the same ONE ENERGY
Although both the ocean and its waves are made of the same water, yet one is called the ocean and the other is called the wave. Similarly, although both the gold and gold-bracelet are one and the same gold, yet one is called the gold and the other is called the bracelet. Similarly any living being and God are no different, for they are the form and formless manifestations of the same divine life force that drives the world entire.

"Kabir says, any living being is both Sagun and Nirgun. Form and Formless. Yet it's the ignorance of "I am this body" that creates the illusion that God is a separate entity."

Accepting death as a part of life serves as a spur to diligence and saves us from wasting our time on vain distractions. It suggests that acknowledging and accepting death as an inevitable part of life can serve as a powerful catalyst for living more intentionally. It implies that by confronting our own mortality, we can redirect our energy away from fleeting distractions and towards meaningful pursuits that bring fulfillment and purpose to our lives.

"Kabir encourages us to reframe our understanding of death as not just something to be feared or avoided, but rather as a natural part of life that can actually inspire us to live more fully. By embracing this reality, we can break free from the constraints of time-wasting distractions and instead focus on cultivating wisdom, compassion, and inner peace."

This composition encourages us to take responsibility for our own flaws and shortcomings by recognizing that the faults we see in others are often a reflection of our own unconscious biases, fears, and insecurities. Kabir suggests that when we point out the faults in others, it's not necessarily because they're flawed, but rather because we're trying to distract ourselves from our own perceived inadequacies. This composition reminds us that true personal growth and harmony can only be achieved by acknowledging and working on our own shortcomings before criticizing those of others.

कबीर खडा बाजार में, मांगे सबकी खैर I

"It is not the world but attachment to it which is the root of all misery." ~
It suggests that our suffering and misery arise not from the external world itself, but rather from our attachment to it. In other words, it is our emotional investment in people, places, and things that creates a sense of ownership and possessiveness, leading to distress when we lose or experience change. This attachment can take many forms, such as attachment to material possessions, relationships, or even our own ego.
This can be applied to various aspects of life. For instance, we may find ourselves becoming overly attached to specific outcomes or expectations in our personal and professional lives. When these expectations are not met, we may experience feelings of disappointment, frustration, or even despair. By recognizing that it is our attachment to these outcomes that is the root of our misery, we can begin to let go of this emotional investment and cultivate a greater sense of detachment.

"Kabir says, detachment does not mean becoming apathetic or uncaring; rather, it allows us to develop a more nuanced understanding of the world and its workings. By recognizing that everything is impermanent and subject to change, we can learn to find joy and fulfillment in the present moment, regardless of external circumstances."

How often we play this game of hide and seek with God. How often we go looking for God but keep our hearts hidden. How often we go outside ourselves for God, searching high and low for any sign of him, yet he’s waiting inside our hearts the whole time. Waiting for us to simply slow down and allow ourselves to be found by Him.
Stop. Be still. Look inside your own heart. Open yourself to be found. You’ll find God when you stop looking and realize instead He is seeking you.

धीरे धीरे रे मना, धीरे सब-कुछ होए I माली सींचे सौ घड़ा, ऋतु आए फल होए II

"Kabir says, life has a way of testing us, pushing us into dark corners where we feel lost and buried under the weight of our struggles. It’s easy to think that we’ve hit rock bottom, that the darkness is a sign of defeat. But sometimes, those dark places are where the most profound transformations happen.
Imagine someone who pursued a career in music for years without recognition. The passion was there, but the doors just never seemed to open. Feeling defeated, they considered giving up. However, during this low point, they started experimenting with a completely different genre, something they’d never dared to try before. In the solitude and darkness of their creative struggle, they discovered a new sound that resonated deeply with audiences. What felt like being buried was, in fact, a pivotal moment of being planted, leading to their eventual success and fulfillment.
This isn't just about one person's unique journey. Think about the scientist who toiled away in obscurity, working on experiments that seemed to lead nowhere, until one day they stumbled upon a groundbreaking discovery. Or the writer who faced constant rejection, only to finally pen a novel that touched millions. These aren’t just stories of success but of transformation that began in the dark.
When you’re in that dark place, it’s crucial to shift your perspective. Instead of seeing yourself as buried, recognize that you are planted. This mindset can change everything. It allows you to see possibilities instead of obstacles, to find strength you didn’t know you had, and to grow in ways you never imagined.
What everyone should know and do about this concept is simple but profound: Trust the process. Understand that the darkness is temporary and that it’s preparing you for something greater. Nourish your mind with positive thoughts, surround yourself with supportive people, and take small steps towards your goals. In time, you’ll find that you’ve grown into a more resilient, compassionate, and empowered version of yourself.
So, when you find yourself in a dark place, remember this: You are not buried; you are planted. Your growth is happening beneath the surface, and soon enough, you’ll break through, blooming into the light."

The trees shed their leaves as part of the cycle of renewal. So is the endless cycle of death and rebirth we are all subjected to since time immemorial. Just like a leaf falling off the tree cannot go back, "what does it mean to be human?" needs to be understood in broader perspective before this precious human existence is lost.
The river of time flows on. The hours quickly change into days, the days into months and the months into years. Suddenly, one day, the bell tolls for us and the call goes forth: “Vacate the house (of the body)!” The body drops down and man realises, too late, that he has lost the golden opportunity of the human birth, thrown away his precious life without ever really coming to terms with its true nature and purpose.
We were not meant to live shallow lives, pocked by meaningless routines and the secondary satisfactions of happy hour.

"Kabir says, with each breath, a precious moment passes by; we have spent one of our precious moments away; what have we done with that golden moment which will never ever be ours again?
We must be as conscious, as sensitive, as particular about our time, as we are with our money. We must use time creatively and never forget that every moment is just the right time to do a right thing. If we wait for more opportune moments, we may have to wait till eternity."

"Kabir says, devotion is the bridge between mortals and God, as the soul tends to seek its divine origin of bliss. But this path is not easy; it is strewn with challenges.
To overcome the spell of Maya is the greatest challenge for a Jivatma caught in Samsara. Though God offers to liberate people from this cycle, and incarnates time and again to reassure them in this regard, people fail to discriminate between the permanent and the fleeting and chase sense objects with great fervour.
Real spiritual development and progress in sadhana are indeed very hard to attain. The workings of maya are so very subtle, so very difficult to overcome, and human nature is fundamentally so unregenerate, that it refuses to be transformed from its vicious state to a state of virtue, goodness. To achieve any measure of success in spiritual life is a difficult and uphill task. It is divine grace alone that can raise the aspirant from darkness to light."

दोस पराए देखि करि, चला हसन्त हसन्त I
अपने याद न आवई, जिनका आदि न अंत II

We want to find faults in others, but not in ourselves. Due to our false ego-sense, instead of judging our own conduct, we commit the error of judging others. In other words, we are unaware of our own house being on fire, but we go out of our way to see if someone else's house is burning out there. Our inflated ego-sense is afraid to face the truth our inner mind would reveal to us — our shocking crookedness, perversions, weaknesses, shortcomings, corruption, ignorance, untruthfulness, selfishness, duality, fear, falsehood, and so on. Instead we find it easy and more pleasant to judge others and find faults with them. The feeling or urge of finding faults in others indicates that the seeds of that kind of faults or weaknesses are present within us, and we are trying to suppress them cutting off the heads of others. A Maya stricken ego-mind is like a fly that lands only on "filth": moral sores of others.

Kabir says, one who can constantly look within to examine and judge himself becomes the "real judge". He then sees "others" in "him" and "him" in "others".

कबीर जे धंधै तो धूलि, बिन धंधै धूलै नहीं I

Lord Shree Krishna said to Arjun, “Do your duty with your body, and keep your mind attached to Me.” As a warrior, Arjun must fight; that is his duty. However, the Lord says to Arjun that even in the middle of a battle, one should remember God.

Kabir says, the same thing is true for everyone—be it farmers, engineers, doctors, students, homemakers, or any other professional, a constant remembrance of God while doing any and all work. Do your worldly duties, but your mind should always be thinking of God. The very instant we forget God, our mind is taken over by the mighty commanders of Maya’s army—desire, envy, greed, lust, anger, hatred, etc. Therefore, it is necessary that we keep our mind always attached to God. The constant remembrance of God's name gives a wakefulness to the person who is engaged in it.
While it is true that karmic consequences cannot be avoided, it is also true that constant remembrance of God's name can mitigate its ill-effects, sometimes to appear as even miraculous."

We have no present. Our consciousness is almost completely preoccupied with memory and expectation. What is the use to meet the Guru everyday and be the same person, without any kind of improvement, even after many years of physical presence. फुलवा भार न ले सके, कहे सखियन सो रोय I
जो जो भिजे कामरी, त्यो त्यो भारी होय II

When a cat falls out of a tree, it lets go of itself. The cat becomes completely relaxed, and lands lightly on the ground. But if a cat were about to fall out of a tree and suddenly make up its mind that it didn’t want to fall, it would become tense and rigid, and would be just a bag of broken bones upon landing.
In the same way, we are all falling off a tree at every moment of our lives. As a matter of fact, the moment we were born, we were kicked off a precipice, and we are falling, and there is nothing that can stop it.
So instead of living in a state of chronic tension, and clinging to all sorts of things that are actually falling with us because the whole world is impermanent, be like a cat.

"We are so delicate, that weight of even a flower is too much to bear! Still, we get involved in life and become heavy like a drenched blanket!
Kabir asks us neither to get involved in life nor to reject it. He hints at the third possibility – living life totally, without getting entangled in it. The problem is not with life; the problem is when we start getting entangled in it.
Attachment is the problem. How large or small that attachment is, makes no difference."

काल करे सो आज कर, आज करे सो अब I
पल में परलय होएगी, बहुरि करेगा कब II

"Kabir says, the true happiness stems from being content with what is currently in our lives, rather than constantly dwelling on what may or may not come in the future. This composition encourages us to focus on the present moment and find joy in the simplicity of life.
It reminds us that we often spend so much time worrying about tomorrow, next week, or next year that we forget to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of today. By being content with what is, we can cultivate a sense of gratitude, appreciation, and peace. It's an invitation to stop striving for perfection and instead, find happiness in the imperfections of life.
What would your relationships be like if you approached each interaction with the same sense of joy and contentment as knowing that tomorrow is not promised?

धीरे-धीरे रे मना, धीरे सब कुछ होय I
माली सींचे सौ घड़ा, ॠतु आए फल होय II

Kabir says, In a world that often demands immediate results and instant gratification, waiting can be one of the most challenging aspects of faith. Yet, placing our trust in the divine timing and wisdom of the Lord offers a profound sense of peace and purpose.

Acknowledging that God's plans are greater than our own allows us to let go of the anxiety and control we often cling to. It's a reminder that everything happens for a reason and in the perfect time, even if we cannot see the full picture yet.

Patience in this context is not passive. It is an active process of trust and faith. It means continuing to pray, to act with integrity, and to remain open to the lessons and growth that come with waiting. Embracing God’s ways involves a willingness to surrender our own desires and timelines, trusting that what He has in store for us is far better than we could imagine.

In moments of uncertainty and impatience, we can find solace in prayer and reflection, reaffirming our commitment to trust in God's plan. By doing so, we align ourselves with a greater purpose and find strength in the knowledge that we are never alone. God's timing is always perfect, and His plans for us are filled with hope and a future. Waiting with patience and faith transforms our journey, bringing us closer to His divine wisdom and love."

जैसे तील में तेल है, ज्यों चकमक में आग I
तेरा साईं तुझमें है, तू जाग सके तो जाग II

In this evocative couplet by Kabir, the physical body becomes not just a vessel, but a sacred site – a "microcosm of the Temple." Imagine ourselves not as mere mortals, but as miniature Temples, each with the potential to house the divine "Light of the Creator." It's a powerful metaphor, urging us to see the process of self-improvement as a sacred act of construction, building a sanctuary within ourselves where divinity can dwell.
But how do we build this inner Temple? Kabir suggests it's not about erecting ornate structures or performing elaborate rituals. It's about tending to the fundamental building blocks of our being – our physical health, our mental and emotional wellbeing, and our spiritual awareness.
Think of the physical body as the foundation of the Temple. By nurturing it with healthy habits, mindful movement, and respect for its limitations, we create a strong and stable base for the spirit to reside. Just as a cracked foundation jeopardizes the entire structure, so too does neglecting our physical well-being hinder the growth of our inner sanctuary.
Next, imagine the mind and emotions as the Temple's walls. Cultivating clarity of thought, practicing emotional regulation, and fostering compassion for ourselves and others are the bricks and mortar that create a space of inner peace and serenity. When the walls of our minds are cluttered with negativity and our emotions run wild, the "Light of the Creator" can barely flicker within.
Finally, Kabir points to spiritual awareness as the Temple's illuminating flame. Engaging in practices like meditation, prayer, or simply connecting with something greater than ourselves ignites the light within, allowing the divine presence to bathe the inner sanctuary in its radiant glow. This light doesn't demand grand gestures or specific beliefs. It's the spark of curiosity, the flicker of gratitude, the gentle hum of connection that resonates within each of us.
"Kabir says, building this inner Temple isn't a one-time project, but an ongoing journey of refining and expanding. There will be days when the foundation needs repair, times when the walls crack with hardship, and moments when the flame seems to falter. But with dedication and perseverance, we can continue to strengthen our foundations, mend the cracks, and rekindle the inner light. The "Light of the Creator" already resides within us. Kabir simply reminds us that we have the power to build a magnificent Temple within ourselves, a sanctuary where this divine light can shine brightly and guide us on our life's journey. Embrace the sacred task of inner construction, nurture your body, mind, and spirit, and watch as your own inner Temple becomes a beacon of peace, love, and the radiant "Light of the Creator."

कस्तूरी कुंडलि बसे, मृग ढूंढ़े वन माहिं I
ऐसे घट-घट राम है, दुनिया देखे नाहि II

There once was a Musk Deer who very early in her life began to notice this heavenly scent in the air. Intoxicated by its smell, the Deer set out to search for the source of this divine aroma.
After a lifetime of searching, in the presence of the final moments of her precious life she realized the scent was coming from her naval.

"Kabir says, Musk Deer and it's search for the musk smell is a wonderful analogy for "searching outside for what is within." We seek to be happy, to find the source of our happiness somewhere out there in the world. We search tirelessly to discover it. However all that we seek is right here. We are the source of our peace, happiness and wellbeing."

चादर ओढ शंका मत करियो दो  दिन तुमको दीनी
मूरख लोग भेद नही जाने दिन दिन मैली कीनी II

When our time inevitably leads us back to the earth, the riches we amassed, the possessions we cherished, and the products we acquired will hold no sway.
What endures beyond our earthly journey is the legacy of compassion we leave behind, the kindness we extended, the love we shared, and the respect we bestowed upon others.
In our existence, it is not the material wealth that defines our worth, but rather the depth of our humanity and the imprint of our benevolence upon the lives of those we touched.
Therefore, invest in the currency of empathy, generosity, and integrity, for in the final measure, it is the richness of our character that transcends the passage of time.

"Kabir says, like a worn sheet, the human body is bound to wither as time goes by and therefore cannot be taken for granted. God Almighty has loaned it to us just for few days. We however forget that when our time on earth is done, money or material things will not matter. But the love, time and kindness we have given others will shine and live on forever."
