बलिहारी गुरु आपनो, घड़ी-घड़ी सौ सौ बार I
मानुष से देवत किया करत न लागी बार II

While there are many generic paths to God Realisation, the path of Guru’s Grace is the most important from the point of view of achieving the ultimate in spiritual evolution. In every aspect of life, it is best if we have a guide or a teacher to help us understand, learn and progress. Making spiritual progress is no exception to this Universal rule and it is only by the Grace of the Guru that God Realisation, the journey otherwise through countless lifetimes, comes true faster than by any other means.

"Kabir says, no amount of salutation will ever be enough to praise the greatness of Guru even if I dedicate to him every moment of my life hundreds of times. He (the Guru) turned me from a human being into God (helped me attain Self Realisation) so quickly."

कबिरा माला मनहि की, और संसारी भीख।
माला फेरे हरि मिले, गले रहट के देख II

The remembrance of God's name is to be done with the tongue of thought and not by word of mouth. By telling beads on the rosary, it may give a mental satisfaction, but leads nowhere. Aeons have passed in telling beads, yet our minds changed not; So cast off the wooden beads and take to the mental ones. Let it be a bead of the mind that dawns an inward light.

"Kabir says, we waste our entire life in performance of outer works of merits, but the soul finds no inlet. The veil within does not give way and soul remains without. We should therefore turn the bead of the mind, and it will act like a push-button giving an ingress of the soul to spiritual realms within. If God Realisation would come true just by telling the beads, so would it have been for the water wheel rotating with pots set around it's rim."

गुरु को मानुष जानते, ते नर कहिए अन्‍ध I

Though the word Guru is often misused to refer simply any teacher or instructor, a true God-illumined Guru is one who, in his attainment of Self Realisation, has realised his identity with the omnipresent Spirit. Such a one is uniquely qualified to lead the seeker on his or her inward journey towards God Realisation. When a devotee is ready to seek God in earnest, the Lord sends him a Guru. A true Guru, ordained by God to help sincere seekers in response to their deep soul craving, is not an ordinary teacher: he is a human vehicle whose body, speech, mind, and spirituality God uses as a channel to attract and guide lost souls back to their home of immortality.

"Kabir says, only fools think Guru to be an ordinary person. Liberation from the mundane existence is impossible for those who are blinded by ignorance."

कबीर ते नर अंध हैं, गुरू को कहते और I
हरि के रूठे ठौर है, गुरू रूठे नहिं ठौर II

A blind man knows he cannot see, and is glad to be led, though it be by a dog; but he that is blind in his understanding, which is the worst blindness of all, believes he sees as the best, and scorns a guide. Willful ignorance can lead to hate and prejudice. Because they know what they're doing is wrong and illogical, but decide to do so anyway.
Plain ignorance can be chalked up to not knowing any better, but willful ignorance is much worse.

"Kabir says, those who are blinded by ignorance go blatantly onwards declaring they need not listen nor learn, for they never understand the importance of Guru in their life. The road to God Realisation is like climbing a high mountain. People often do not anticipate a number of things about the path to God. The Guru is like a mountain guide who knows the terrain and helps us along until we have reached the peak. It would be foolish to try and climb this high mountain without a guide. We can never make it to the top on our own."

मोको कहाँ ढूँढे बंदे, मै तो तेरे पास में I

It's not that God is only inside. He is also outside, equally - All-knowing and All-powerful - omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. As God is beyond words and beyond the mind, without realising Him inside, He cannot be realised outside. From there the search can expand without. Seeing God in all things (including within) and knowing all beings as one's own Self is truly His Realisation.

"Kabir says, Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe. Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times."

When you are moving blindly through the valley of life, stumbling in darkness, you need the help of someone who has eyes of wisdom. You need a Guru. He alone who is God-realized, and who has been commanded by God to redeem souls, is a Guru.To follow one who is enlightened is the only way out of the great muddle that has been created in the world. He who faithfully follows a true Guru becomes like him, for the Guru helps to elevate the disciple to his own level of realization.

"Kabir says, one who has surrendered himself to his Guru, one who serves the Guru whole-heartedly knows no fear in any of the realms of the three worlds."

"Kabir says, Guru is like a potmaker and a disciple is like a pot. The potmaker hits the pot from outside and provides every support from within. In the role of a potmaker, when the Guru molds clay (i.e. disciple) by hitting it and tapping it, a disciple might feel that the Guru is being harsh, but in fact he is giving shape to his personality through his teachings. The potmaker always keeps one hand inside the pot, which means unseeingly the Guru always has the back of his disciple giving him loving support. When the pot is ready, the potmaker puts the pot in the market, which means the Guru wants to test the interaction of his disciple with the world. Through myriad ways the pot is tested as customers tap to see its sturdiness. The pot in the market also means that the ripened discipline is ready to hold the mantle after being through all the stages of learning successfully."

गुरू सों ज्ञान जु लीजिए, सीस दीजिए दान I
बहुतक भोंदू बहि गये, राखि जीव अभिमान II

"Kabir says, absolute surrender to the Guru is a must to attain his blessings. When the pupil surrenders to the Guru absolutely, the alchemy of Guru begins to work and the life of pupil is changed forever. Surrender requires putting aside one’s ego, it requires strength. One must not try to exercise surrender artificially, for it must come from within. Surrender can only be total, you cannot surrender in part. It is just like a circle, a geometric circle. It cannot be half; you cannot draw a half circle. If you draw it you cannot call it a circle. A circle must be complete. Half, then it is something else, not a circle at all. Surrender can only be total. It is a circle, a spiritual circle. You surrender from end to end. Nothing is left behind.
The very phenomenon of surrendering is enough. No further help is needed. Everything will be done by surrender itself. Surrendering means you are no more, surrendering means the ego has been dropped.

Surrendering means now the center has been dispersed; you exist but without a center. If there is no center, there is nothing to protect; the walls drop by themselves. If there is no one, your whole structure of defense disappears by and by; it becomes futile. You become an open space.
Surrendered, you become open to the divine forces.
The problem is surrendering. After surrendering, there is no problem. In surrender the Guru wants you emancipate from the attachment to the outcome. Once you have set yourself free, you no longer suffer from performance pressure. You reach a calm state of mind that is willing to accept failure and success with equanimity. It doesn't take a genius to understand that your performance improves when there is no pressure to win or excel. The Guru wants his pupils to achieve nothing short of greatness. Following the path directed by the Guru, nothing is unachievable for the disciple, because when Guru is around, the universe plays along."

However seeking the worldly possessions from the Guru who is the giver of liberation is as preposterous as merely milking the Sacred Cow Kamdhenu known to grant all wishes and desires or mistaking a Paras Stone known to turn ordinary metal into precious gold as an ordinary stone or seeking a worn out cloth from the king who has granted a wish.
It is up to us what we should give importance to in this rare and precious human birth and hence seek it from the Guru, the bestower of the Supreme Bliss, for there is no greater giver in the world than the Guru and no greater seeker in the world than the disciple. The disciple desires to seek the treasure (liberation) from Guru, the Best Gem of the universe."

It is the Guru who makes us aware of the incompleteness of the notions "I, Me, Mine" in whose powerful grip we all are and how it is the biggest obstacle on our path to God Realisation. He guides us how to free ourselves from the bondage of this ignorance by his wisdom thus cleansing the impure mind. He introduces the soul to God. The Guru teaches us how to perform devotion and helps us along the way, as we continue the practice of devotion. It is the Guru who eliminates the roadblocks arising out of past impressions that come in the way of performing devotion. That’s why Kabir says, if Guru and God both are present at the same time, to who should I bow down first? I shall prostrate before the Guru by whose grace I could see my Lord Govind."

गुरू बिन ज्ञान न उपजै, गुरू बिन मिलै न मोष I
गुरू बिन लखै न सत्य को, गुरू बिन मिटै न दोष II

Life is a dichotomy. Life is not simple, it is so complicated. Opposites make life, such as pleasure and pain, happiness and suffering, greed and generosity, passion and dispassion. Life is full of opposite values, and they pull you in different directions. When the complications in life become too much, the poor mind is unable to handle it, and it just breaks down. That is when it needs support. This is when the Guru comes into picture and saves the mind. So, whatever you cannot handle, whatever appears too much for you, give it away to the Guru, so that you remain sane and balanced. When the surcharge electricity comes, the circuit breakers stop the excess flow of electricity and saves the apparatus. You can say that the Guru is such a circuit breaker.

"Kabir says, in the journey of life, we encounter numerous teachers who impart knowledge and wisdom. However, the term ‘Guru’ holds a profound significance that transcends the conventional understanding of a teacher. A Guru is not merely an educator but a mentor, guide, and philosopher who illuminates the path of life with the light of his wisdom.

The Guru is a gateway to Liberation, a link between the individual and the Immortal. He stands upon the threshold of immortality; and bending down, he raises the struggling individuals with his one hand, and with the other lifts them up into the empyrean of everlasting joy and infinite Truth-Consciousness.

The Guru helps remove the layers of ignorance covering your true essence in turn helping us on our journey of Self Realisation. The Guru can only take you to the doorway of Self Realization removing all the obstacles that hinder your progress. However your human “freewill” demands that you take the final step alone."

Under the spell of ignorance and delusion, one entertains the wrong notion that the material body is what we truly are. This  false or mistaken identity is the seed of egoism and out of this comes an arrogant sense of doership. It is the deluded mind which is the root cause of distress, misery, and the ignorant cycle of repeated pain and suffering. The Guru dispels the veil of ignorance - the ego-mind - the sense of "I, me, mine, your", that prevents us from God Realisation to come true. क्षमा बडे न को उचित है, छोटे को उत्पात I
कहा विष्णू का घटि गया, जो भृगु मारी लात II

For many of us, "Forgiveness" is a big scary word. Whether we’re seeking it or giving it, it can be a hard thing to come by. It is a decision to let go of bitterness and resentment towards another person or situation, for when you change the direction of your focus, the direction of your life changes too.
Holding on to anger or grudges will not bring justice to the other person nor will it hold them accountable for their wrong doing. The grief and pain only affects you. Holding on does not give you power – it leaves you powerless.
It’s important to forgive others, not because they deserve your forgiveness, but because you deserve peace. You deserve to feel renewed and healed; and you will. Forgiveness isn’t about changing the past, it’s about changing the future.

"Kabir says, the illustrious Sage Bhrigu tested the tolerance of the Supreme Lord Vishnu by purposely kicking His chest. When Bhrigu arrived at Lord Vishnu’s abode, Lord Vishnu was fast asleep. The Sage tried to awaken Him up, but Lord was in deep sleep. Bhrigu kicked Lord Vishnu extremely hard right on his chest so as to try and trigger His temper too. Lord Vishnu woke up and immediately touched Bhrigu’s feet enquiring if the Sage had hurt his feet while kicking him. The Sage realized that Lord Vishnu’s humility definitely merited him as the greatest, the Supreme. No wonder it is said, to err is human, to forgive is divine."

Maya doesn't mean non existent. Rather it means ever changing. For example, in a blossomed flower, you enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the flower. But by evening it withers. Maya doesn’t mean that the flower never existed; it means that everything is in a constant state of change. Due to this no worldly thing can give same happiness all the time. The one thing that never changes is that everything except God changes. And therefore eternal bliss can be had only through God Realisation.
Believing that happiness can be found in other people or outside of ourselves, we will not be able to cross over this Maya. The pursuit and purchase of physical possessions will never fully satisfy our desire for happiness.

"Kabir says, the fleeting happiness derived from worldly objects and possessions is worth nothing compared to the Supreme Bliss of God Realisation, the priceless jewel whose shine never ceases."

The Liberation entails annihilation of the soul’s false sense of individuality and realisation of its complete non-difference from God. It cannot be accomplished merely by visiting the external or man-made shrines or spots of pilgrimage. बुगली - Crane bird represents Maya or man enticed in worldly pleasures
नीर बिटालिया - Water has been dirtied
सायर - Ocean or Bhava Sagar
हँस - True devotee or a Realised Soul

The world in which we live is not very different from the hall of illusions which Duryodhana entered. It is a giant illusion in itself, where our egos grow in strength, experience emotions and where we assume one thing for another and suffer from confusion, delusion and emotional turmoil. If Mayasabha symbolizes the world, Duryodhana symbolizes the egoistic individual (jiva) and Draupadi personifies Nature or Maya who instigates beings into different states of delusion, confusion and mental or emotional instability. Maya is ubiquitous in this world, and none is spared by it. The influence of Maya manifests in every aspect of our lives. It clouds our judgment and creates confusion and conflicting states whereby people fail to see things as they are or make wise choices.

"Kabir says, it is said that, if diluted mixture of milk and water is given to a swan, swan is able to extract milk and drink it. When it comes to extracting milk from a mixture, swan is swan and crane is crane. i.e. crane does not have this ability. A Realised Soul like a swan lives amidst worldly chores (Maya) yet remains intuitively absorbed within, living in the world but not of the world."

We should be remembered for the things we do. They are more important than what we say or what we look like. The things we do outlast our mortality. The things we do are like monuments that people build to honour heroes after they've died. They're like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honour the Pharaohs. Only instead of being made out of stone, they're made out of the memories people have of you. That's why your deeds are like your monuments, built with memories instead of with stone.

"Kabir says, everyone will leave a legacy, what you sow so shall you reap. The worldly riches are not everlasting and neither is life. Also we can't take them with us when we die. The material wealth isn’t the treasure you should be seeking, for you will be remembered more for your kindness than any level of success you could possibly attain. We brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world, but you die rich if you leave behind a legacy of good deeds."

Time is precious because life is short. We don’t know what will happen in the next moment. We know how much money is balanced with us, but we don’t know how much balance time is in our life. Money lost or wasted can be earned again, but time gone is gone forever. You can never get it back.

"Kabir says, if you believe that money gives you happiness, you have never had enough money. People often say that money can't buy happiness. But what they really mean is that money can't buy meaning. Because without a sense of purpose, life can feel pretty empty, even if you have all the material comforts money can buy. One may spend all his life earning riches but it is of no use to us when we lie on the funeral pyre. We came empty-handed into this world, and we will go empty-handed. You don't become happy by pursuing happiness. You become happy by living a life that means something. The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

"Kabir says, while we often take refuge in God in bad times, He is hardly remembered when the goings are good. There will be no place for sorrow in our life if we rejoice always and pray without ceasing, for God loves to hear from us just as much in the good times as He does when we are in need."
