गुरू गोविंद दोऊ खडे, काके लागूं पांय I बलिहारी गुरू आपने, गोविंद दियो बताय II
It is the Guru who makes us aware of the incompleteness of the notions "I, Me, Mine" in whose powerful grip we all are and how it is the biggest obstacle on our path to God Realisation. He guides us how to free ourselves from the bondage of this ignorance by his wisdom thus cleansing the impure mind. He introduces the soul to God. The Guru teaches us how to perform devotion and helps us along the way, as we continue the practice of devotion. It is the Guru who eliminates the roadblocks arising out of past impressions that come in the way of performing devotion. That’s why Kabir says, if Guru and God both are present at the same time, to who should I bow down first? I shall prostrate before the Guru by whose grace I could see my Lord Govind."
