जीवन थैं मरिबो भलौ, जो मरि जानैं कोइ I
मरनैं पहली जे मरै, तो कलि अजरावर होइ II

"Kabir says, we need to learn and practice the art of death, before we are overpowered by it. Life and death, joy and sorrows, pain and pleasure, etc., are real to the man in bondage. But to the truly wise, they are all in the world-play. Blinded by ignorance we feel sad when faced with death because we identify ourself with the finite frame of the body. In other words, a truly wise thinks himself to be the Soul and has a body. To the contrary, the majority of us think we are the body and have a Soul. So long there is identification with the gross body, there will be the fear of loss and death. But the same death fills the mind of the wise with Bliss; for he knows at last he is going to his True Home!
The truly wise takes this body and the material world as only a reflection of the Supreme Reality. However, most of us take this body and the world real (permanent), and live our life cycle only to find death at the end.To the contrary, the truly wise takes the life cycle backwards; he dies first, thus gets the death out of the way, and then he goes on living as Jeevanmukta. Kabir wants us to understand that what comes and goes is unreal. That which is Real never dies, and that which dies is not Real. Since the mind of the truly wise is already dead, he has no reaction to death. For him it's natural for the body to die, as it is natural for the incense stick to burn out. Therefore, the event of death itself is of no importance to the truly wise.
As long as one identifies with the body and the world of gross objects, there will be the constant fear of death and of losing one's possessions. It's through the Guru's Grace that one can hope to get relief from the fear of death. God is not to be reached by the fearful mind. Thus, unless one turns inward and seeks Self-realization, one cannot hope to attain communion with God."

"Kabir says, you do not know about what may happen in your life tomorrow, for you are merely a vapor (like a puff of smoke or a wisp of steam from a cooking pot) that is visible for a little while and then vanishes into thin air. Life is fleeting, like a passing mist. It is like trying to catch hold of a breath. All vanishes like a vapor. Its time we must ask ourself what we are doing with this precious human birth?  Wake-up wake-up from the slumber of ignorance says Kabir and strive for the inner awakening right in earnest treasuring God's name in the mind and actions before it is too late."

गुरु को मानुष जानते, ते नर कहिए अन्‍ध I
होय दुखी संसार में, आगे जम का फन्‍द II

Though the word Guru is often misused to refer simply any teacher or instructor, a true God-illumined Guru is one who, in his attainment of Self Realisation, has realised his identity with the omnipresent Spirit. Such a one is uniquely qualified to lead the seeker on his or her inward journey towards God Realisation. When a devotee is ready to seek God in earnest, the Lord sends him a Guru. A true Guru, ordained by God to help sincere seekers in response to their deep soul craving, is not an ordinary teacher: he is a human vehicle whose body, speech, mind, and spirituality God uses as a channel to attract and guide lost souls back to their home of immortality.

"Kabir says, only fools think Guru to be an ordinary person. Liberation from the mundane existence is impossible for those who are blinded by ignorance."

"Kabir says, the Guru is necessarily the perfect spiritual preceptor, but the disciple too must fulfill his obligations by cultivating in himself a true spirit of dedication to the Guru. The entire matrix upon which the relationship is founded is the familiar idea of reciprocity.
Guru’s grace descends upon those who feel utterly humble and faithful to him. Faith is confidence and trust in Guru. Faith is firm conviction of the truth of what is declared by the preceptor without any other evidence or proof. The disciple who has faith in the Guru argues not, thinks not, reasons not and cogitates not. He simply obeys, obeys and obeys.
One’s individual ego, preconceived notions, pet ideas and prejudices, and selfish interests should be given up. All these stand in the way of carrying out the teachings and instructions of one’s Guru.
The aspirant, before he desires the Grace of the Guru, should deserve it.The supply of Divine Grace comes only when he is fit to receive it.
However if the Guru happens to turn out incompetent, or if the disciple is not up to the mark then their interaction is as futile as crossing the river sailing in a boat made of stone.

कबीर प्रेम न चाषिया, चषि न लीया साव I
सूने घर का पाहुनाँ ज्यूँ आया त्यूँ जाव II

We largely treat one another according to what we think others deserve. When someone does something that feels unkind to me, I’m cold to them. If they speak a harsh word to, I fire one back at them. Rather than giving grace to the unkind or unlovely, I pay out what I think they’ve earned. Because all we know is this imperfect human love, we can have a hard time thinking God can love unconditionally, treat us with grace, not hold grudges, or view us with love when we’re unlovely. God’s love can feel foreign because we never experienced anything like it: a love so free and gracious.
God’s gracious love can seem too good to be true.

"Kabir says, life of a person who has never experienced God's love is like visiting an empty house devoid of people."

Worry and pyre have one thing in common: they both burn the body. But the difference is that a pyre burns the dead body whilst the worry burns the alive body. In a futile bid to satisfy the never-ending "hunger and thirst" of the senses we live with anxiety day and night. More the material wealth or possessions we have more worry. On the other hand, one who has little, wanders around in anxiety searching for more. Hence both "haves" and "have-nots" worry and suffer. Worry can be likened to a swing, which will give you something to do but it won't get you anywhere. Instead of living in the eternity of the present moment, we worry about the past and the future knowing well that worry can't change the past but it can certainly ruin the Now. Similarly worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.

"Kabir says, for every worry under the sun, there is a remedy or there is none. If there be one, hurry and find it. If there be none, then never mind it.”

"Kabir says, there is no solid existence of a shadow: a sword cannot cut it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot drown it. Try as you may, it still exists. It does not have a real existence, yet the shadow is. It walks behind you; if you run, it runs after you, if you stop, it stops. Whenever something exists, it also has its shadow. The Supreme Reality has its shadow, too. It is Maya, the illusion. That which is not. The shadow of the Supreme Reality is this world we live in. Ignorance is Maya on the scale of a man.
It is the "I am this body" idea that is causing the shadow of ignorance, not the sun.
Just like the shadow disappears when you become one with the sun, God Realization comes true when one gets rid of "I am this body" idea.
While earning a living keeps the entire humanity occupied, at the community kitchen which serves meals to all free of charge, regardless of religion, caste, gender, economic status, or ethnicity, the abundant food supply never ceases. In other words while the greed of material possessions is unending, the same Maya runs after the Realized Soul who lives amidst the world but not of the world."

WHEN YOU DIE, don't worry about your body... your relatives will do whatever is necessary according to their possibilities.
They will take your clothes off, wash you, dress you, take you out of your house and take you to your new address known as graveyard.
Many will come to your funeral to "say goodbye. Some will cancel commitments and even miss work to go to your funeral.
Your belongings, will be sold, given away or burned.
your keys, your tools, your books, your shoes, your clothes... And rest assured that the world will not stop to cry for you. In your job, you will be replaced.  Someone with the same or better capabilities will take your place.
Your assets will go to your heirs.... And do not doubt that you will continue to be judged, questioned and criticized for the small and great things you did in life.
Your sincere friends will cry for a few hours or a few days, but then they will return to laughter.
Your photos will hang on the wall or remain on a piece of furniture for a while, but then perhaps they will be stored at the bottom of a drawer.  And we will only live in the memory of those who loved us.
Someone else will sit on your couch and eat at your table. The deep pain in your house will last a week, two, a month, two, a year, two... Then you will be added to the memories and then, your story is over.
In your new life you will only need your spirit.  And the value you have accumulated here will be the only fortune you will have there.
That's why Kabir says, try to live fully and be happy while you're here because, "From here you won't take what you have. You'll only take what you gave."

"Kabir says, we never seem to forget or ignore to cherish our body, all day along, everyday. Not only that, we all take care of our body without anybody reminding us. Nothing to be proud of your body, for it is but a bundle of bones wrapped up in skin. The mighty who rode the thoroughbred (horses of high quality) under resplendent canopies  eventually lay buried. Those who are very proud of their greatness and wealth return empty-handed in the end. The greatest illusion is we mistakenly confound our real identity with the gross body. Neither ‘you’ is body, nor ‘I, me’ is body. It is something else that animates this body from within. That is the Real ‘us’ of ‘you’ and ‘me’, which is formless. From the moment we are born, death is our final destination. Death comes to all. It spares none. It treats the mighty and weak equally. Power and wealth are like short lived shadows. Just as the sun rises, the shadows disappear similarly when one is spiritually enlightened, one sees the reality of these worldly perishable things."

The depth of one's understanding of God defines the level of his realisation of God. After having walked on the pathway for a long time, and through travails and turmoils of body and mind, of nature and society, the aspirant can envisage to himself certain landmarks, certain lamp-posts, which will help him to walk with courage and confidence on the pathway to God, and attain to the highest ideal he has been seeking. As he advances on his pilgrimage, visions of God, he attains more moral perfection. Subsequently this leads to more vision of God, and the entire process becomes an auspicious circle acquiring momentum both by aspirant's ascending efforts and God's descending Grace.

Material possessions and wealth can undoubtedly bring some level of comfort and convenience. They can provide access to opportunities, experiences, and luxuries that might otherwise be unattainable. However, these external factors are not the source of true happiness. True happiness, according to Kabir, resides in the soul, the innermost essence of our being. It is a state of inner peace, fulfillment, and contentment that arises from cultivating positive qualities like kindness, compassion, and self-acceptance.

"Kabir encourages us to shift our focus from seeking happiness in external things to cultivating it within ourselves. It reminds us that true happiness is not about what we have or what we achieve, but rather about who we are and how we connect with ourselves and the world around us."

One day a beggar went to see a Sufi fakir and found him seated on velvet cushion inside a beautiful tent with it's ropes tied to golden pegs in the ground.
Seeing all this the beggar cried: "What is all this! I have heard so much about you and your spirituality and non-attachment but I am completely disillusioned by all this ostentation around you."
The fakir laughed and immediately jumped up and said Let's go and walked off with the beggar not even waiting to put on his sandals.
After a while the beggar was distressed. "I left my begging bowl in your tent. What shall I do without it? Please wait while I go back and fetch it."
The Sufi roared in laughter. My friend said he," the gold pegs of my tent were stuck in the earth, not in my heart; but your begging bowl is still chasing you.

"Kabir says, when you are attached to things, they take control of your life, your body, mind and senses and define your life, personality and destiny. They also limit your freedom and awareness. Non-attachment means not to become enslaved to anything and live like a lotus leaf in the muddy waters, without being touched by it or polluted by it."

साधु शब्द समुद्र हैं जा में रतन भराय I
मन्द भाग मुट्ठी भर कंकड हाथ लगाय II

This composition of Kabir highlights the profound impact of our perception on our understanding of the world around us. It suggests that our interpretations and experiences are shaped not only by the external objects themselves but also by our inner perspectives, biases, and levels of wisdom.
A fool is someone who perceives the world superficially, without depth or understanding. They may see a tree simply as a physical object, devoid of its deeper symbolism, its connection to nature, or its role in the broader ecosystem.
A wise man, on the other hand, sees beyond the surface. They perceive the tree not only as a physical entity but also as a symbol of life, growth, resilience, and the interconnectedness of all things. They see the tree as a part of a larger narrative, a tapestry of life that is both delicate and enduring.
The difference between the fool and the wise man lies not in the tree itself but in the way they perceive it. The tree remains the same, but their interpretations are vastly different.

"Kabir says, a Sadhu' is like an ocean full of pearls of wisdom, yet an ignorant in the company of a Sadhu comes up merely with a handful of sand."

Worry (most often) is about something that hasn’t happened. It seeps into our present, muting our happiness and creating scenarios that don’t exist. When we do this, we give worry roots to grow.
And while there may be reasons for concern about certain situations, they can be easily misconstrued - because the future hasn’t happened. It's better not to bring our worries forward. Don’t let them breathe or breed. We must remember, what comes next is not promised; the future is all up for the taking because there are too many variables of an altered state, and worry keeps you attached to the worst.

"Kabir says, except worry for every ailment under the sun there is a remedy.

Pride of power, wealth, beauty, high caste, youth, possessions, titles, education, knowledge, lineage, high social status is futile, for death nullifies it all. Death is inevitable for everyone. Dying is certain, but the timing is not. Death is a great leveler, time brings all luxuries of life to an end. All feelings of superiority in man as only an illusion and self deception. No one can avoid death. No one can keep from dying or put off the day of death. That is a battle we cannot escape; we cannot cheat our way out. Death doesn't come running, but you can't run away from it either. No one knows the hour of death or in what land one may die."

गुरू गोविंद दोऊ एक है, दुजा सब आकार I
आपा मेटै हरि भजैं, तब पावैं दीदार II

Gautam Buddha had a cousin named Anand. He spent 40 years in the company of Lord Buddha. When it was time for the Buddha to leave his material form, Anand said “I have got so much association with you, yet I have not progressed spiritually.  In comparison, your other disciples have made great strides.” Gautam Buddha replied “Anand! This is your mistake. You erred when you came to me the first time, many years ago. Anand asked him “What was my mistake?”
The Buddha then reminded Anand of their dialogue forty years ago.
Anand: I am not your disciple yet, but I shall be one tomorrow. I am now speaking as your elder cousin brother, and I have a few conditions. First, I shall make you my Guru, but whenever I invite any person to meet you, you should not avoid him under any pretext.
The Buddha smiled: “Yes, agreed”.
Anand: Second, you must take me with you everywhere you go. You should not depute me on work that requires staying away from you.
The Buddha: Yes, you shall be with me at all times.
Anand: Lastly, you must answer every question of mine and should not deny me an answer on any pretext.
The Buddha: I am ready to grant all that you wish.
Gautam Buddha recalled this dialogue that took place 40 years ago. The Buddha said, “Anand, you did not develop the feeling of Divinity towards your Guru inside your heart and mind. You treated me like your younger brother and did not look upon your Guru as God. Hence, you did not receive any spiritual benefit.”
How do we develop a feeling of ‘Godliness’ towards our Guru?   We must always feel and think of our Guru as God Himself.

"Kabir says, God and Guru are one. It's the ego-mind - the sense of "I, me, mine, your" - preventing us from seeing the Reality of it."

गुरू गोविंद दोऊ खडे, काके लागूं पाय I

Who is more important — Guru or God?
Kabir says, the Guru shows the way, paves the way, and it is the Guru that takes the disciple to God. There is a Goal, but if somebody doesn't take him to that Goal — that somebody being his Guru— then God will always remain a far cry. He says, the Goal may be there, but who is taking me to the Goal? I can't go alone; I don't know the road and neither the Goal will not come to me. So Guru's role is crucial. And therefore between Guru and God, when it comes to whose feet we must touch first, the precedence must go to Guru because the Guru shows us the path – the path to live a meaningful life and to attain the true purpose of this rare human birth, God Realization."

"Kabir says, loving devotion (Bhakti) to God emerges as the best road to liberation. Bhakti' serves as a major elevating force, which ‘pulls’, so to speak, or raises one in his transformational journey towards self-transcendence. Although there are other motivations for elevation along the transformational ladder such as the desire to true knowledge, the desire to become free from implications of karma and the desire for a yogic perfection, still, Bhakti' is perhaps the central source of inspiration to attain the highest. It is the Bhakti that elevates our human nature and prepares us to live to the fullest extent in a moral manner, for it is the moral and spiritual upliftment only that can–take us towards Self Realization. The pursuit of Truth is true Bhakti (devotion). It is the path that leads to God. There is no place in it for cowardice, no place for defeat. It is the talisman by which death itself becomes the portal to life eternal."

We never know how many people are before us.

We can not step out of the line.
We can not avoid the line.
So while we wait in line...
Make moments count.
Make priorities.
Make the time.
Make your gifts known.
Make a nobody feel like a somebody.
Make your voice heard.
Make the small things big.
Make someone smile.
Make the change.
Make up.
Make peace.
Make sure to tell your people they are loved.
Make sure to have no regrets.
Make sure you are ready!

"Kabir says, life is in a constant state of flux. We can't hold onto anything forever because everything that we possess in our experience is temporary. Misery comes to the one who tries to hold too tightly to possessions, people or situations. To be happy, we must be able to adapt to change and accept the fact that nothing is permanent."

यह जग कोठी काठ की, चहुं दिश लागी आग

Once a sadhu was sitting on the bank of a river. He had just finished taking his meals and he wanted to have a tiny nap. Just as he was about to doze off, he saw a washerman walking down the bank, in his direction leading two donkeys loaded with dirty clothes. The sadhu thought, "Oh, I hope he doesn't come here. I am in no mood for small talk.. and he must smell awful. All those dirty clothes, those dirty donkeys." But the washerman called out, "Hey, Babaji! I need to go back home and get something I forgot. Could you watch my donkeys while I am gone? Please, you are a holy man! You should be helping humanity. I'll be back soon." The sadhu pretended not to hear. He just sat there with his eyes closed, hoping the man would go away, and sure enough, his prayer was answered. He heard footsteps walking away and he dozed off sweetly in the shade. When the sadhu woke up, an hour had passed and the washerman was back, shouting, screaming, as he came towards the sadhu. "Where are my donkeys? " The washerman's face was red as a beet, and he was directing all this rage at the sadhu. "You were supposed to look after my donkeys. Why didn't you do it? You're a sadhu. You go find my donkeys and bring them back!"
The sadhu became absolutely furious. "This is no way to treat a man of God!", he shouted back. "You are supposed to speak to me with respect. Hey! Don't you kick me! I am not one of your donkeys!" "I know!", the washerman said. "My donkeys have more sense! " And they began to fight. Now the washerman was very healthy and strong from all the exercise he got by washing clothes, and the sadhu, who never got any exercise at all, was very skinny and frail. In no time at all, the washerman had him pinned to the ground and pummeling him with both fists. Eventually, just as the person who takes a beating gets tired, the one giving the beating also wears himself out. Soon, both men were lying in the mud, completely exhausted.
The sadhu then raised his eyes toward heaven and cried, "O God! I have been worshiping You all my life! I think of You, I pray to You, I adore You. For the past thirty years, God, not a single day, not a single night has gone by that I haven't thought of You. For Your sake, I have given up all the comforts of life. But when I needed You, O God, where were You?" As soon as the sadhu stopped complaining, a voice boomed out of heaven. "O sadhu, I wanted to help so much. I came as soon as you called. And I would have saved you, I would have pulled you out of there with My own hands. But when I looked down, all I saw was a tangled mass of angry energy. I couldn't tell who was the washerman and who was the sadhu."
This is exactly what happens once anger erupts and we can't tell who is right and who is wrong, who is a good person and who is not. Anger completely takes over. Freedom from anger is a magnificent virtue.

"Kabir says, we may give up even gross anger. But subtle anger is more difficult to overcome and only sincere devotional service will help us to get rid of it."

करै दूरी अज्ञानता, अंजन ज्ञान सुदये I
बलिहारी वे गुरु की हँस उबारि जु लेय II

"Kabir says, prostrations to the Guru who, by the collyrium-rod of Knowledge, opens the eyes of those who are rendered blind by the darkness of ignorance. He stands upon the threshold of immortality; and bending down, raises the struggling individuals with his one hand, and with the other lifts them up into the empyrean of everlasting joy. In your Guru, you have your human ideal of perfection. He is the pattern from which you wish to mould yourself.
Bhavsagar implies the "ocean of existence." It is often used to describe the cyclical nature of life and the ongoing cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. This cycle is often compared to the ocean, with each life being like a wave that rises and falls. The Guru gives you the rope of knowledge and saves you when you are drowning in this ocean of existence. It is the Guru that reminds you that the true purpose of this rare human birth is not merely to exist, but to strive for the greatest purity of soul, purity of thoughts, mind, heart, soul, and intent."

कल करे सो आज कर, आज करे सो अब ।
पल में परलय होएगी, बहुरि करेगा कब ॥

"Kabir says, when you waste a moment, you have killed it in a sense, squandering an irreplaceable opportunity. But when you use the moment properly, filling it with purpose and productivity, it lives on forever."

कबीर बैरी सबल है, एक जीव रिपु पांच I
अपने अपने स्वाद को, बहुत नचाबै नाच II

"Kabir says, in this ocean of worldly life, millions of waves of vices surge like the torrential rains, storms and floods. Within this body dwell the five enemies
lust, anger, greed, emotional attachment and egotism. They become powerful evils when their negative impact dominates a person’s mind. These ‘five’ also have their numerous variations such as enviousness, stubborn mindedness, selfishness, deception, wickedness, falsehood, corruption, bigotry, hatred, insecurity, desires and fears, discontentment, intolerance, revenge, unforgiveness, unhappiness, and so on. They bring man down to the animal nature.
Since these are the negative pulls of human nature and very powerful and destructive, the internal war to eradicate them needs much greater bravery, fearlessness and indomitable courage."

करता रहा सो क्यों रहा, अब करी क्यों पछताय I
बोये पेड बबूल का तो आम कहां से पाय II

Your mind is like a piece of land planted with many different kinds of seeds: seeds of joy, peace, mindfulness, understanding, and love; seeds of craving, anger, fear, hate, and forgetfulness.
These wholesome and unwholesome seeds are always there, sleeping in the soil of your mind. The quality of your life depends on the seeds you water.
If you plant tomato seeds in your gardens, tomatoes will grow.
Just so, if you water a seed of peace in your mind, peace will grow. When the seeds of happiness in you are watered, you will become happy.
When the seed of anger in you is watered, you will become angry. The seeds that are watered frequently are those that will grow strong.

"Kabir says, you reap what you sow. The future consequences are inevitably shaped by our present actions."

ज्ञान रतन का जतन कर, माटी का संसार I
आय कबीर फिर गया, फीका है संसार II

Maya doesn't mean non existent. Rather it means ever changing. For example, in a blossomed flower, you enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the flower. But by evening it withers. Maya doesn’t mean that the flower never existed; it means that everything is in a constant state of change. Due to this no worldly thing can give same happiness all the time. The one thing that never changes is that everything except God changes. And therefore eternal bliss can be had only through God Realisation.
Believing that happiness can be found in other people or outside of ourselves, we will not be able to cross over this Maya. The pursuit and purchase of physical possessions will never fully satisfy our desire for happiness.

"Kabir says, the fleeting happiness derived from worldly objects and possessions is worth nothing compared to the Supreme Bliss of God Realisation, the priceless jewel whose shine never ceases."
