Many mystics have tried in the past to gain control over their mind, to save them from getting enticed by the lure of Maya, the worldly entanglements, but they failed. Sage Vishwamitra renounced everything, retired to the forest, and did penance for several years. But he too failed to control his mind. As soon as he saw Menaka the beautiful celestial nymph, he could not resist himself and got allured. Menaka successfully lured him into the honey trap breaking his meditation.
"Kabir says, the expulsion of worldly desires from the mind is a most difficult task. You will find many cases of apparent renunciation, with an inner longing for the world. Relinquishment of the world will not give real renunciation, so long as the heart still craves for the world. The separation of the heart from worldly cravings, in spite of the possession of worldly objects, is superior to the separation of the body from worldly objects, in spite of the worldly cravings that remain in the heart."
