The greatest hurdle to God Realisation is one's ego. In reality, nobody cannot totally remove his/her false ego-sense. It defines our relationship with ourselves and our world, essentially providing meaning to the self to insure survival, success, protection, procreation etc. However, what we are asked by Kabir is to annihilate the negative aspect or negative impact of the BLOATED egotism, which kills our True Nature. It feels real because we attach our false ego-sense to some perceived parameters in some form, such as power, status, beauty, youth, strength, wealth, education, knowledge, possessions etc. Among all Maya's allures, false ego-sense is the worst one, so is hypocrisy.
We accuse one person of doing exactly what we are doing but believe that it is somehow “different” when that person does it. It is typically caused by an inflated sense of ego and self-righteousness, coupled with an inability to be humble.

"Kabir says, devotion and false ego-sense do not go together. The ego-mind is extrovert (sense-bent). It needs to be controlled by turning it toward the real goal of the life, God-Realisation. And this comes true when we cultivate humility, the essence of all good virtues. Humility abides in the heart of those fortunate ones who have divinized their inner-self. True humility is the recognition of one's imperfections. The true spirit of humility and surrender can put us in proper frame of mind to receive the grace and guidance of the Guru or God."
