निंदक नेरै राखियै, आँगन कुटी छवाय I बिन पानी साबुन बिना, निरमल करै सुभाय II
Kabir had a jealous neighbor, whose only pastime was to speak ill of him behind his back. One day that neighbour died. People thought the news of his death will make Kabir very happy. To the contrary, upon hearing the news, Kabir became very sad. When asked as to why he was sad instead of being happy Kabir said “the reason I feel sad is that since he is gone, who will wash my sins off and take upon himself?”.
"Kabir says, the proximity of the one who speaks ill of us behind our back facilitates the cleansing of our weaknesses without soap and water. In other words we should love those who speak ill of us behind our back, for they do us a great favor. This is because by doing so they help us to recognize our shortcomings so that we can eradicate them."
